Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory (OAJ) Storm Warning System (IEC 62793:2020) - Storm Detector PREVISTORM

The Centre for Studies of Astrophysics and Cosmology of Aragon (CEFCA) is a Foundation of public interest of the Government of Aragon that was created in 2008 to define and build the Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre, as well as to carry out and promote its scientific exploitation. Cefca's main scientific topics focus on Cosmology and the Evolution of Galaxies.

Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory (OAJ) is located in Sierra de Javalambre, in Teruel, Spain. It consists of two professional large field of view (FoV) telescopes with image quality throughout the whole field:

  • a) the JST250 telescopeJavalambre Survey Telescope, a large telescope with a diameter of 2.55m main mirror diameter with a field of view of 3 degrees,
  • b) and the JAST80, Javalambre Auxiliary Survey Telescope, an 80cm diameter main mirror telescope with a field of view of 2 degrees.

CEFCA, which already had the first version of the Previstorm system, decides to install in June 2021 the new version of the detector, specifically the 48V version that counts with heaters, which are of great help to melt snow and ice that can occur at the height of 1957 meters, which is where the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory is located.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose for which the storm detection equipment has been acquired is to plan the operation of the telescope and the auxiliary systems that enable the correct functioning of the observatory. To fulfil this task the team uses the relay outputs to be able to control, through the Central PLC, the management of the generator sets, cooler and the operation of the observatory's telescopes.

Easy installation: both at the hardware and software were configured an put into operation in a single morning.
