DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXTERNAL PROTECTION: LIGHTNING RODS
There are two types of external protection:
Passive protection systems:
It is a protection system that does not perform any prior action to lightning strike, its functionality is executed when lightning strikes the structure in charge of driving and dissipate the energy of lightning to the ground.
It is the system comprising:
- Franklin lightning rods
- Capture meshes
Active protection systems:
The active protection system performs pre-action to the lightning strike, the priming system emits an ionization creating a shock return to the cloud directed channelling and directing the beam to a safe and ready for download point.
It is the system comprising:
Active protection offers a number of advantages over other types of protection:
- Protection not only of the structure, also around or open areas.
- Ease of installation, reducing the price of labour. It is much cheaper.
- Less visual impact, having a less bulky installation, protected building aesthetically not altered significantly.
STANDARDS:
Implementing rules for a system of effective protection of persons and property:
- UNE 21186:2011: Lightning protection - Lightning rods with priming device.
- NF C 17-102:2011: Protection contre la foudre - Systèmes de protection contre la foudre à dispositif d’amorçage.
- NP 4426:2013: Proteção contra descargas atmosféricas - Sistemas com dispositivo de ionização não radioativo.
In addition to these, there may be legislation or specific to each country must be taken into account norms.
