Lightning protection for Energy Storage Systems is not only a safety issue, but a strategic investment to ensure long-term functionality, sustainability and efficiency.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are a key technology in the transition towards a more sustainable energy model. These systems enable the storage of surplus energy generated by renewable sources such as solar or wind power, ensuring its availability during periods of higher demand. In addition, BESS help stabilise the electricity grid, reduce consumption peaks, and provide energy backup in critical situations, making them an essential component of modern electricity infrastructure.

At INGESCO, we offer customised studies that enable us to implement comprehensive and efficient solutions, ensuring compliance with the regulations in force in each country.

  • External Protection: Protection systems based on conventional lightning rods or INGESCO® PDC lightning rods are designed to safely capture and channel atmospheric discharges to the ground, ensuring long-lasting protection in accordance with international standards UNE 21186:2011 and IEC 62305. These devices are complemented by down conductors and earthing systems that ensure effective current dissipation, minimising structural and electrical risk.

  • Internal Protection: Surge Protection Devices, designed in accordance with IEC 61643, safeguard critical equipment such as converters and battery management systems (BMS). In addition, equipotential bonding ensures uniform current dissipation, protecting both equipment and personnel.

  • Preventive Protection: The PREVISTORM® early warning system, compliant with IEC 62793:2020, anticipates thunderstorms by monitoring the atmospheric electric field, enabling proactive measures such as disconnecting sensitive equipment or activating safety protocols.

  1. BESS systems contain critical electronic components, such as power converters and battery management systems (BMS), which are highly sensitive to surges and direct lightning strikes.

  1. Lightning can generate sparks or overheating, potentially triggering fires in installations, specially in systems containing lithium batteries.

  2. Investing in a lightning protection system significantly reduces the costs associated with repairs, equipment replacement, and downtime, maximising BESS perfomance and optimising return on investment.

  3. Lightning damage can cause significant disruptions to power supply and system operation. Proper protection minimises the risk of costly and prolonged operational dowtime.
